My relationship to clay is centered around feeling. Whether it’s the tactile qualities of clay or an emotional journey I take while making, I’m using clay to cope with unwanted experiences. Pinch,Stretch,Repeat is a visual representation of my mind and body working through intrusive and repetitive thoughts. The constant process of pinching and stretching clay becomes a compulsion to cope with these overwhelming emotions. As I organize these objects, I gain a sense of freedom from the thoughts that so frequently follow me and hold me down. By leaving the clay in its unfinished state, I assure myself that I am not bringing these cyclical thoughts into my future. As I work through these negative emotions, I search for positive ones to carry with me into the future.
